For travel of column/saddle on the bed (X-axis) on SKODA Horizontal Boring and Milling Machines is used feed system consisting from gearbox and rack.
The original design of gearbox for travel in X-axis was designed as single pinion unit with feed speed change arranged by means of switching respective electromagnetic clutches.
There were developed double pinion gearboxes (both mechanical as well as Master-Slave versions) to reduce the backlash on X-axis feed of HBM´s Skoda (as well as Rotary Tables). This backlash compensation is particularly required for modification of manually operated machines to CNC-controlled versions.
